The internet has turned the world in to one giant, interconnected beast. This web delivers information to humanity at a rate never before reached in all of human history. Because of this, every business should have some kind of presence on the World Wide Web. This can be a web page, a
Facebook page, or even presence on a site like Tumblr or WordPress. Regardless of the route a company takes, there will be blog posts. These posts are pieces of prose that must be both informative and entertaining. This is the face of the business many will see so posting should be handled with care. The following are eight simple rules for writing a blog post.
1. Don’t talk down to the reader
Doing this will turn away people who could be a customer to your business. Using verbose language that assumes everyone reading is a simpleton can put a damper on every blog post. Even if the information within contains great secrets that can change the world, if people hate the tone they will not read it.
2. Quality Control
Be sure to do a grammar and spelling check on each post. An occasional mistake is forgivable. Yet, if the writing your company puts out on the web is full of mistakes, don’t expect people to stick around. This also includes factual errors. If the piece is about anything that can be checked, make sure everything is truthful. The internet is one of the great tools for research in the history of man and the readers of your blog will use it.
3. Don’t drown the reader in marketing
It is fine to create a blog that is a marketing tool. Many businesses do this on a regular basis. The key is to use the blog for
marketing a product or service without going overboard. The reader will come to your blog because of what your business has to offer. Treating that reader as a person will keep him coming back and increase traffic to the blog.
4. Keep Personal Information out of the blog
That being said, don’t use the blog as a tool to educate your readers about your own personal woes. This is a business blog that is created to help your company. Over Marketing won’t help the readership grow but neither will letting the world know your ex cheated on you every other paragraph.
5. Constancy is the key
Set up a schedule and stick to that schedule. This one simple rule will bring in more readers over the long haul than any other. Stay consistent with your blog posts.
6. Stay Relevant
One of the reasons that people like to come to your blog is to see up-to-date information about your company and/or product. Keep the readers updated with the relevant news they are seeking.
7. Don’t try to hard
Be a good representative of the business or brand when writing a post. Don’t try to be hip or cool or anything you are not. Readers can smell a fake from a mile off. Just write a post full of information about your company and be yourself.
8. Have fun
Remember that this is a post for your company, but have fun. Writing a blog post can be a thrilling experience. Let yourself enjoy the time and the readers will respond.
